One Day - David Nicholls

One DayOne Day by David Nicholls

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book. The relationship between Dexter and Emma is so believable. It takes the best friends who love each other relationship to the extreme and it spans 15 years! You spend the whole book wishing that Dexter will clean himself up and Emma will finally step out of her shell. When it finally happens it doesn't come about in the normal mushy cheesy love story way. It is a perfect mesh of love and hate, frustration and pleasure. With that being said, I feel the ending was too abrupt. Suddenly, Dexter and Emma are fighting about their lack of children and he leaves for work. They agree to meet in the evening to look at a house. She's on her way there (riding her bike of course) and she is hit by a car and dies moments later. Now Dexter has to live without Emma after he's finally gotten a taste of true happiness. A year later he is with his deli manager and they are in love. Such a bittersweet ending to a great book. I was disappointed. It is well worth the read though.
